Electric Water Heaters

In general electric tank water heaters are cheaper and have a lower cost of installation than gas water heaters; however the annual price of operation is more than their gas counter parts. On average an electric water heater cost $505 compared to the $360 annual operation cost of gas water heaters. Given that electric water heaters have no pilot light they are quieter and in general safer than gas water heaters. Since electric water heaters use less parts than gas water heaters they tend to have longer lives than gas water heaters, however if an electric water heater breaks down replacement parts are more expensive than gas water heaters.

Gas Water Heaters

Gas water heaters are generally more energy efficient and cost-effective than electric water heaters, due to their lower energy consumption when heating water. Furthermore, gas water heaters heat water faster and have a faster recovery time than electric. This should be taken into consideration when determining your household's hot water needs. Additionally, gas water heaters continue to work even during power outages, unlike electric water heaters. Finally, gas water heaters are often less prone to breakdowns than electric water heaters, and repair costs are usually lower.

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, are an excellent way to save energy. As you use the hot water, it is flash heated by the tankless water heater, and when not in use, the heater stops heating the water, thereby providing greater efficiency while conserving energy. Moreover, tankless water heaters can last for over 20 years, and the energy and replacement savings they provide typically outweigh their initial cost.
